PSEUDONYMISATION IMPLEMENTATION PROJECT
                                              or
DE-IDENTIFICATION PROJECT of PATIENT INFORMATION

The use of patient data is on the rise, especially with the need for increasing service efficiencies

Are you aware of your compliance requirements and have you set up your data handling contracts already?

How sure are you that your systems and processes are meeting the spirit of your agreements as far as privacy is concerned?

The news is littered with embarrassing stories of organisations that have followed the letter of the law with regards to privacy but have missed the spirit, alienated key stakeholders and seriously jeopardised expensive projects.

From April 2010 the Information Commissioner has been able to fine each organisation in England up to £ 500,000.00 for each Serious Data Protection breach.

Don't underestimate this.

My point of view is:

Every Breach of the Data Protection Act is SERIOUS and that the causes have to be mitigated.

We should be more concerned about the Privacy of Patient and Staff data.

Despite the abundance of recent data security failures, we are expecting incidences of privacy breaches to rise.

This is due to the simple fact that the more data is used, the greater the risk of  privacy breaches, unless protection is also improved.

As agreed by security experts some breaches are inevitable.

With the human factor being the weakest link, we might think that that the current state of security is as good as it can get.

What we need is a greater understanding of how we can ensure privacy despite a breach.

In this way, with any breach, the privacy of the data itself is protected as much as possible and you and your staff are protected against accidental data handling errors.
Data de-identification provides this benefit.

The public sector is only now coming to realise that ensuring privacy, which is not yet fully addressed by security, is key to guaranteeing trust and confidence.

The importance of privacy and confidentiality has been one of the key tenets of the medical profession for centuries.

What is changing for Healthcare organisations is the increasing use of patient data for Commissioning, Performance Management and many more "Secondary uses"

The more Data is used, the greater the risk of a privacy breach.
